Broadband As It Should Be: Q&A with BeFibre's Paul May

BeFibre is a UK-based internet service provider that’s set out to change the status quo.

Founded in 2021, the company delivers superfast full-fibre broadband with symmetrical upload and download speeds, and a clear promise not to increase prices mid-contract. This reflects a customer-centric approach to connecting communities, with a growing network focused primarily on towns and cities across Northern England, the Midlands, and parts of Southern England.

At the heart of BeFibre is a small but passionate team driving the company’s mission forward.

Paul May, Head of Channel Management at BeFibre grew up in Merseyside during the dial-up internet era, spending hours listening to that distinctive connection noise and asking Jeeves random questions. This early experience sparked an interest in connectivity and technology, a passion he now brings to his role at BeFibre. He developed the company’s affiliate programme and oversees multiple sales channels across the business.

We sat down with Paul to learn more about why speed isn’t everything when choosing a broadband provider, how BeFibre supports local communities and which technologies may shape how we connect in the future.

Tell us a little about yourself

I’m head of channel management at BeFibre.  That means my 9-5 involves looking after our partners and developing our affiliate programme. I also support the optimisation of multiple omni sales channels, including wholesale, digital, retail, and direct sales.

When I’m not at work, you’ll find me at home with my wife, Emma, and our two boys, Ben and Jake. We also have our little prince, Griff, who’s a 6-year-old Cavapoo. Oh, and I’m a Liverpool FC fan!

If you had to describe BeFibre in three words, what would they be and why?

Be-rilliant, innovative and ambitious.

BeFibre really does have a unique value proposition that sets us apart from our competitors. Our customer-centric approach guides everything we do and informs the decisions we make. Plus, we’re very lucky to have lots of experience and expertise across the BeFibre team that contributes to our credibility and capability.

What sets BeFibre apart from other ISPs in the market?

We're an award-winning full-fibre to premise broadband provider. Our mission is to bring the latest broadband technology, powered by a reliable network, to hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses in the UK. We only lay new full-fibre cables to connect homes and businesses to our network (no copper wires) and use existing ducts to minimise disruption within our build areas. Because our network only contains the latest technologies and new fibre cables, we can offer speeds that are much faster than our competitors.

We’re all about delivering value to our customers. This starts with providing premium full-fibre broadband service for a highly competitive price. We believe this is ‘Broadband as it should be’. Our new Be2300 super-fast broadband is our very own multi-gig service. This will give customers amazingly speedy 2300 Mbps upload and download speeds at a very pocket-friendly fixed monthly fee.

Speaking of cost, that’s another area where we set ourselves apart because unlike other providers, we say no to mid-contract price hikes. We don’t impose upfront fees and symmetrical upload and download speeds mean everyone in the family can work, stream and play with confidence.

We hear a lot about broadband speeds, but what else should customers be looking for?

Reliability is super important as full-fibre broadband powers our daily lives. Whether it’s working from home, gaming, studying or using connected devices, we all need broadband that just works. Some would argue (and I am one of them) that it’s as important as any other home utility. I could probably go a couple of days without gas or water but not having internet for a few hours is unthinkable!

Customer service is important, too. If you do have a problem, you want to know you can pick up the phone or go online and talk to someone who’s genuinely helpful and knows their stuff. I’m proud to say our team is brilliant at this and it’s often mentioned in our customer reviews.

How has BeFibre made a positive impact beyond providing broadband?

BeFibre is extremely proud to support our local communities and goes beyond just providing high-speed broadband services. We've been involved in a range of charitable initiatives that foster social engagement and support vulnerable groups and we’re always open to new ideas and opportunities in this area.

BeFibre is also actively involved in various community projects. For example, we often support local sports clubs by sponsoring events and helping out with fundraising activities.

Our team also participates in other charitable efforts such as donating to food banks and packing Christmas gift boxes for the homeless. These actions highlight BeFibre’s commitment to making a broader social impact, extending far beyond broadband connectivity alone.

What's the most challenging part of providing broadband service that most people don't realise?

While providing broadband service comes with various challenges, the positive aspects such as fostering community development, enhancing quality of life, and promoting innovation are significant. These contributions often go unrecognised but play a vital role in shaping a more connected and empowered society.

Do you remember your first internet service provider? What stands out about that experience?

It seems like a lifetime ago but when I think back, it’s got to be the classic dial-up noise! A true throwback. It was a weird symphony of screeches, beeps, and static - kind of like a robot having a meltdown underwater!

Share a 'blast from the past' - what's an old website or online service you remember from the early internet days?

Ask Jeeves was my go-to internet website. Randomly asking pointless questions to see what the answer would be – childish I know! In fact, that site is still around today but the name has been shortened to Ask, and the Butler icon has been retired.

What future technologies excite you most, and how do you see them reshaping our daily lives?

It’s got to be Artificial Intelligence. AI enhances people's lives in many ways by improving productivity, convenience, and opportunities for innovation. Whether it's work, education, connectivity, entertainment or other key areas, there are so many applications for this technology – most of which we probably haven’t even imagined yet.

The future of connectivity isn’t just about speed, it’s about smarter, more human-centric experiences. As broadband becomes increasingly central to everyday life, reliability, transparency, and community impact matter more than ever.

BeFibre delivers on this vision today. With transparent pricing, next-generation infrastructure and a genuine commitment to the communities it serves, BeFibre offers broadband as it should be.
